Painting and sculpture
Our region can boast many artists, some of whom recorded the past and others of whom are still alive today.
From amongst all the painters, sculptors, ceramists and so on, it is worth picking out:
Cherubino Patà (1827-1899),
a native of the village of Sonogno, who spent several years studying at the Belle Arti in Brera, before returning to Ticino, where he was commissioned to paint Sonogno parish church. In around 1860 he moved to Paris, where he worked in Courbet's atelier.
Giovanni Gada (around 1600),
who came originally from Brione Verzasca and became a much appreciated architect, especially for his work on the Castello dei Marcacci and the La Fraccia oratory.
Giuseppe Antonio Felice Orelli (1706-1776),
a well-known painter. Some of the frescos in the La Fraccia oratory and the church of Sant'Antonio in Locarno are attributable to him. He is considered to have been one of the best proponents of late baroque in Ticino.
Giovanni Baronzio (around 1345),
a painter from Giotto's Rimini school, who owes his fame particularly to the frescos in the church in Brione Verzasca.
Gianni Bricchi (still alive),
a famous sculptor, who came originally from the Verzasca Valley. He is known especially for his filiform statues. He currently lives in Gordola.
Manuela Buzzini (still alive),
who works in Verzasca granite, creating unique objects of rural art, such as candle holders, plates and vases. She has an atelier in Brione Verzasca.
Pedrazzini Pedro (still alive),
who graduated from the Accademia delle Bella Arti in Florence and then went on to spend several years studying under Remo Rossi in Locarno. His travels to France and Germany helped to mould his style, and today he is a popular painter and, especially, sculptor.
Pol Poroli (still alive),
a passionate painter, who has attended courses with various Ticino artists, such as Fernando Pozzi, Fausto Corda, Marco Gurtner and Manlio Monti.
In 1996, he moved from figurative to abstract representations. At the time of writing, he is the president of the Verzasca Art Association.
